You begin listening to the hypnotist, guide yourself using self-hypnosis or start listening to a hypnosis audio recording. For the first minute or two, all seems well. You follow the words, notice your breathing and perhaps become pleasantly absorbed in a sensation of heaviness or comfort.
Then, without consulting you, your mind remembers tomorrow’s appointment. Or wonders if you left the hair straighteners on. Or starts thinking about the chat you had earlier the day.
You notice the thought and return to the recording. But now another question arrives: How much did I miss? That question is swiftly joined by several of its irritating relatives:
Am I hypnotised yet? Was I more hypnotised a moment ago? Should my body feel heavier? Am I thinking too much? Perhaps I am one of those analytical people who cannot be hypnotised.
A car passes outside. You hear it. This seems like further evidence for the prosecution. You become annoyed with yourself and spend the next few minutes attempting to force your mind to be quiet.
The original distraction lasted perhaps five seconds. The judgement, analysis and attempted thought control occupied the next five minutes.
If this is familiar, you are not necessarily doing self-hypnosis badly. You may simply be treating an ordinary movement of attention as proof of failure. Mind wandering during self-hypnosis can interrupt engagement, certainly, but it does not automatically invalidate the session. The more useful question is not, “Did my attention ever wander?” It is, “What did I do when I noticed?”
That distinction matters. The aim of hypnosis or self-hypnosis is not to manufacture a mind in which nothing happens. It is to organise attention around ideas and experiences that serve a useful purpose—and to become better at returning when attention inevitably travels elsewhere. It is worth bearing in mind that you are still alive and sentient when engaging with hypnosis and it is an unrealistic expectation to think you need to be 100% focused the entire session!
Why do people expect an empty mind for hypnosis?
Many people arrive at hypnosis carrying an extraordinary collection of expectations, most of which hypnosis itself did not ask them to bring.
Traditional inductions often include relaxation instructions, closed eyes, slowed breathing and language about “drifting deeper”. Popular descriptions refer to trance, switching off the conscious mind or bypassing an internal gatekeeper (all of which are notions that I robustly critique). Meditation is frequently caricatured as the achievement of complete mental silence. Stage hypnosis contributes images of people who appear oblivious to everything except the hypnotist. Marketing sometimes promises total escape, effortless transformation or a mental off-switch.
Put these influences together and it is easy to form the following rule:
If I am properly hypnotised, I will stop thinking, stop noticing the room and follow every word without interruption.
That rule is not a sound definition of hypnosis.
An influential definition developed by the American Psychological Association’s Division 30 described hypnosis in terms of focused attention, reduced peripheral awareness and an enhanced capacity to respond to suggestion (Elkins et al., 2015). Researchers continue to debate aspects of that definition and hypnosis is not explained by one unanimously accepted theory. However, “focused attention” does not mean the permanent abolition of all competing thought. “Reduced peripheral awareness” does not mean deafness, unconsciousness or a complete loss of contact with the environment.
Relaxation is also neither universal nor compulsory. Active-alert hypnosis has been studied using eyes-open, activity-increasing procedures, including movement, rather than the familiar recliner-and-drowsy-voice arrangement (Bányai, 2018). Hypnosis does not become invalid because you are alert, because your eyes are open or because your brain has declined to imitate a bowl of warm custard.
How attention actually behaves
Attention is selective, but it is dynamic.
Even while completing an ordinary task, attention can move among external sensations, internal speech, memories, goals, emotional concerns and monitoring of our own performance. Mind wandering is commonly understood as thought that becomes decoupled from the immediate task or environment, although researchers continue to refine how it should be defined and measured (Smallwood & Schooler, 2015).
It is not a rare cognitive defect. A meta-analysis of real-world sampling studies estimated that people reported mind wandering during roughly one-third of daily life, although estimates varied substantially according to the measurement method and context (Kawashima et al., 2023). The important point is not the precise percentage. It is that human attention fluctuates.
Hypnotic procedures can change that experience. Research has associated hypnotic induction with increased absorption and, in some circumstances, reduced spontaneous thought or mind wandering (Cardeña et al., 2013; Fazekas et al., 2020). Yet “reduced” is not “eradicated”, and individual experiences differ.
A hypnotic task can organise attention around a suggestion: the imagined movement of a hand, a memory of competence, a change in perceived discomfort or the rehearsal of a future behaviour. Competing material may become less prominent. It can still reappear.
Think of attention less as a spotlight welded permanently to one location and more as a light you can direct. It may be captured by a sudden noise, a bodily sensation or an unfinished concern. The practical skill is to direct it again.And not to become too bothered by it drifting away every now and then, accept that is a natural part of the process instead. If you then worry and analyse too much, you create a problem which didn’t need to exist.
Mind wandering is an event; “I have failed” is an interpretation
This is perhaps the most important distinction in the entire article.
A thought about tomorrow’s appointment occurred. That is an event.
“This proves I was never hypnotised and cannot concentrate” is an interpretation.
The interpretation may produce frustration, anxiety and further self-monitoring. It also occupies attention for far longer than the initial thought. The person is no longer engaging with the suggestion because they are conducting a live forensic investigation into whether they engaged with the suggestion.
A brief shift in attention does not establish that:
- You were never hypnotised.
- You processed none of the suggestions.
- You have low hypnotic responsiveness.
- You are incapable of improving your attentional skills.
- The whole session was wasted.
Nor should we swing to the opposite extreme. It would be equally unhelpful to claim that attention never matters. If you missed most of the instructions, remained absorbed in an unrelated problem or repeatedly stopped to answer messages, your opportunity to engage with the relevant suggestions was reduced.
Mind wandering is not automatically failure. But sustained disengagement can matter. So we can trust ourselves and develop the cognitive skill.
When distraction genuinely interferes
Distraction is more likely to reduce useful engagement when:
- Your environment repeatedly interrupts you.
- The recording or exercise is longer than your current capacity or willingness to sustain it.
- The instructions are confusing, overly elaborate or irrelevant.
- You are so tired that you keep losing the thread or falling asleep when sleep is not the intended goal.
- Pain, breathlessness, temperature or another physical discomfort dominates attention.
- You are attempting to multitask.
- Strong emotion or persistent worry needs to be addressed before this particular exercise.
- You spend most of the session evaluating your performance rather than participating in the psychological task.
This is not a moral judgement. It is information. If a 30-minute recording repeatedly loses you after eight minutes, insisting that you “try harder” may be less intelligent than choosing a shorter exercise. If an instruction is incomprehensible, returning to it 17 times will not make it clearer. If your smoke alarm is making a noise, please attend to the smoke alarm. It is not an auditory deepener!
Seven common attention traps in self-hypnosis
1. Performance monitoring
The question “Am I hypnotised yet?” seems reasonable, but repeated checking competes with the experience you are trying to create.
Imagine attempting to become engrossed in a film while asking every 20 seconds, “Am I engrossed? How engrossed? Is this the correct degree of engrossment?” You would be assessing absorption from outside it rather than allowing yourself to participate.
Useful evaluation has a place—usually before and after an exercise, or at planned intervals. Continuous evaluation can become the task instead of supporting it.
2. Thought suppression
Trying not to think about something requires you to monitor whether you are thinking about it. That monitoring can keep the target thought accessible.
Wegner and colleagues’ famous “white bear” experiments demonstrated paradoxical effects of thought suppression: asking people not to think of a white bear did not reliably remove it and could contribute to subsequent rebound (Wegner et al., 1987). Later work has refined the conditions under which ironic effects occur, so this should not be reduced to the claim that every attempt at mental control always backfires. Nevertheless, “I must have no thoughts” is a poor self-hypnosis instruction.
Rather than trying to evict every thought, acknowledge what has appeared and redirect attention towards a chosen direction.
3. Perfectionism
Perfectionism turns a normal fluctuation into a failed test.
If your rule is that good self-hypnosis contains no distraction, every practice session provides opportunities to fail. Worse still, the effort to detect failure promotes the performance monitoring described above.
Set a more useful standard: not perfect concentration, but repeated, purposeful engagement.
4. Unhelpful passivity
A hypnotists voice, a hypnosis recording or your own internal dialogue cannot overpower every competing thought while you remain entirely passive. Hypnotic suggestions invite psychological activity: focusing, imagining, remembering, anticipating, interpreting and responding.
Active participation need not mean straining. You can allow a response to develop without deliberately forcing it. But “allowing” is different from waiting for an audio track to confiscate your consciousness.
5. Overly complicated suggestions
Some scripts pour adjectives, metaphors, sensory details and nested instructions into the listener faster than they can construct a meaningful experience. More words do not automatically produce more hypnosis.
A clear suggestion gives the listener a comprehensible task. What should they attend to? What response are they invited to imagine or permit? Why is it relevant to their goal? Simplicity often recruits attention better than verbal decoration.
6. Poor timing
Practising when rushed, highly stimulated, surrounded by interruptions or preoccupied with an urgent demand makes the task unnecessarily difficult.
Perfect conditions are not required. Reasonably supportive conditions help, especially while learning. Three purposeful minutes at a sensible time may be more valuable than 20 resentful minutes squeezed between emails and the school run.
7. Lack of personal relevance
Attention is naturally recruited by material that is meaningful, credible and connected to current goals. Generic suggestions can feel too remote or implausible.
“From now on I am completely confident in every situation” may trigger an internal debate. “During tomorrow’s meeting, I can pause, breathe out and deliver my first point at a steady pace” provides a credible behavioural target.
Personal relevance is not merely about sprinkling someone’s name into a script. It involves fitting the suggestion to the person, context, intended outcome and evidence they would recognise as progress.
The RETURN framework for a wandering mind
I use RETURN as a practical way to organise the response to distraction. It is my mnemonic, not a validated clinical protocol, and it should not be presented as one.
R — Recognise
Notice that attention has moved. Recognition is not evidence of failure; it is the moment at which choice becomes possible.
E — Exhale
Allow an unforced breath out and release unnecessary frustration. This is not because one special breath magically repairs hypnosis. It is simply a brief transition that can reduce effort and mark the return.
T — Tag
Label the distraction briefly: thought, sound, sensation, memory or evaluation. Do not begin writing its biography. A short tag can help you recognise what occurred without becoming absorbed in commentary about it.
U — Use
If appropriate, incorporate the event. A passing sound might become a reminder to settle more fully into the exercise. A sensation might become the focus of curiosity. A relevant memory may supply useful material for a suggestion.
Using is optional. You do not need to transform every lawnmower into a symbol from the unconscious.
R — Redirect
Return to one clear anchor or psychological task: the voice, a phrase, the breath, a sensation, an image, a memory or the next step in a rehearsal.
Do not attempt to reconstruct every word you missed. Rejoin the exercise where it is now.
N — Notice the successful return
The return is the practice. Register it as evidence that you detected the shift and redirected attention. If you regard each return as failure, you train frustration. If you regard it as a successful repetition, you train the skill you need.
Research on focused-attention meditation has described a cycle involving mind wandering, awareness of mind wandering, shifting attention and sustained attention (Hasenkamp et al., 2012). Meditation and hypnosis are not interchangeable, but this attentional model usefully illustrates why noticing and returning can be treated as part of practice rather than as the collapse of it.
Self-hypnosis for analytical people: give the mind a useful job
People sometimes describe themselves as “too analytical for hypnosis”. Analysis is not the enemy. Unhelpful analysis is analysis conducted at the wrong time, directed at the wrong question or used to avoid experiential participation.
Rather than attempting to silence an analytical mind, recruit it.
Try one or more of the following:
- Count observable changes in sensation. Notice warmth, pressure, movement, tingling or muscle tone without demanding a dramatic response.
- Compare two sides of the body. What is similar or different between the left hand and right hand?
- Rate absorption before and after. Use a simple 0–10 scale, then set the rating aside during the exercise.
- Construct credible suggestions. Replace grand declarations with specific statements you can engage with.
- Define evidence of change. What behaviour, sensation or decision would indicate that the exercise had helped?
- Rehearse a sequence. Mentally practise the steps involved in giving a talk, beginning a run or responding calmly to a familiar trigger.
- Ask open questions. “What would a small increase in comfort feel like?” can invite exploration without prescribing one correct experience.
- Treat the session as an experiment. Compare strategies rather than grading your identity as a hypnotic subject.
- Record observations afterwards. Write two or three sentences once the practice ends, instead of narrating the entire session while it happens.
The aim is to move analysis from hostile invigilator to useful research assistant.
Can distractions become part of self-hypnosis?
Sometimes.
A passing sound can cue you to return to the suggestion. A bodily sensation can become an object of close, curious attention. A relevant memory can supply detail for mental rehearsal. A practical worry can be acknowledged and placed on a written list before you begin.
If you suddenly remember that you left the oven on, do not turn this into a metaphor for inner warmth. Stop and check the oven. Some intrusive practical thoughts are signals to act. Deal with what is necessary and restart the session later.
The same principle applies to distress. Not every disturbing thought or emotion should be absorbed into a hypnotic exercise. If the content feels overwhelming, destabilising or connected with significant trauma or risk, stopping can be the appropriate response. Attend to immediate safety and seek suitably qualified professional support where needed.
Flexible self-hypnosis includes knowing when not to continue.

Mind wandering, ADHD and neurodiversity
Attention experiences vary substantially. Research has linked ADHD with increased spontaneous mind wandering, while distinguishing spontaneous wandering from deliberate, chosen thought (Seli et al., 2015). That does not mean mind wandering proves that someone has ADHD. Diagnosis requires a proper assessment of a broader, persistent pattern and its effects across contexts.
It would also be inappropriate to claim that hypnosis treats ADHD on the basis of these observations. Nor should we assume that every neurodivergent person needs the same adaptation.
If conventional closed-eye procedures are difficult, experiment carefully with:
- Shorter sessions.
- Eyes-open practice.
- Active-alert hypnosis.
- Gentle movement where it is safe and suitable.
- More frequent prompts to re-engage.
- One clear task rather than several layered suggestions.
- Reduced environmental distraction.
- A visible, simple point of focus.
An individual might find movement regulating; another may find it distracting. One person may benefit from silence; another from a structured recording. The sensible approach is collaborative experimentation, not the invention of a fixed “neurodivergent hypnosis type”.
A seven-day attention experiment
This is an exercise in learning, not a diagnostic test or a treatment protocol. Practise only where it is safe to direct attention inward. Do not use it while driving or operating machinery.
Days 1–2: One physical anchor
Practise for three minutes. Choose one neutral or pleasant physical anchor: the contact of your feet with the floor, the movement of breathing or the resting weight of one hand.
Each time attention moves, use the RETURN sequence and resume. Your objective is not zero distraction. It is recognition and redirection.
Days 3–4: Add one simple suggestion
Keep the physical anchor and introduce one credible suggestion, such as:
As I breathe out, I can allow a little more muscular ease in my shoulders.
Or:
For these three minutes, I can become increasingly curious about sensations of steadiness in my hands and feet.
Use one task. Resist the urge to build a West End production inside your head.
Day 5: Try eyes-open or active-alert practice
Choose a safe, stationary form: sit upright with your eyes open, focus on a point in front of you and use alerting suggestions such as clarity, energy or purposeful concentration. Alternatively, incorporate slow, comfortable movement if appropriate.
Compare it with closed-eye practice. Do not assume one is superior.
Day 6: Make distraction the cue
For this session, deliberately decide that noticing any distraction will cue one easy breath out and a return to the anchor. This changes distraction from an enemy into a prompt for the target skill.
Day 7: Review the evidence
Ask:
- What most often captured my attention?
- Which anchor worked best?
- How quickly did I return?
- Which suggestion was easiest to engage with?
- Did my frustration decrease across the week?
- Which format will I repeat or modify?
Do not evaluate success solely by how “deep” you felt. Examine your ability to participate, return and use suggestions, as well as any relevant changes in the outcome you were practising for.
How to use hypnosis audio recordings when your mind wanders
Choose a recording that fits your immediate goal and the time you genuinely have available. Use it somewhere safe and reasonably quiet. Never listen while driving, cycling on the road or operating machinery.
Then listen actively. Follow the psychological invitations: focus, imagine, remember, compare, rehearse or respond. When attention wanders, return to the current words. Attempting to reconstruct the missing section merely creates another task competing with the recording.
Repeat sessions when the recording is designed for repetition and you find it useful. One imperfect listening does not provide a final verdict. Equally, do not judge a programme only by whether you remained continuously absorbed. Evaluate relevant outcomes over time: sleep patterns, practice consistency, behaviour, coping, confidence in a defined situation, or another measure appropriate to the goal.
Stop if the content causes significant distress. An audio recording cannot observe your responses or adapt in real time, which is one reason some issues are better addressed with an appropriately trained professional.

What this means for professional hypnotherapy
A competent hypnotherapist should not interpret every pause, eye movement or report of an unrelated thought in the same way.
The practitioner needs to explore whether a client is:
- Briefly distracted.
- Reflecting productively on a relevant idea.
- Confused by the instruction.
- Physically uncomfortable.
- Highly self-conscious and monitoring performance.
- Disengaged from material that lacks relevance.
- Experiencing distress or another response that requires the exercise to stop.
Those possibilities call for different responses. The therapist might simplify a suggestion, shorten the exercise, ask for feedback, adjust posture, change the attentional strategy, address a concern directly or discontinue hypnosis.
This is why professional training must involve more than memorising and reciting polished scripts. A script cannot formulate a case, notice confusion, negotiate a meaningful goal or respond intelligently to feedback. Professional hypnotherapy requires principles, observation, communication, flexibility and ethical judgement.

You do not need an empty mind for hypnosis
If your mind wanders during self-hypnosis, begin by resisting the dramatic conclusion.
Attention moved. You noticed. Now you can return.
Sometimes distraction is brief and inconsequential. Sometimes it signals that the exercise, timing, environment or suggestion needs changing. Sometimes an urgent practical matter or significant distress deserves attention instead. The answer is not automatic reassurance and it is not automatic self-criticism. It is intelligent evaluation.
The aim of self-hypnosis is not to produce a mind in which nothing happens. It is to organise attention around something useful, engage with suggestions and develop the capacity to redirect yourself when attention travels elsewhere.
You may not need to get better at never wandering. You may need to get better at returning.
