Great article, thanks.
I used to get caught up in all the "holiday" stress, spending and eating... not anymore. From Halloween forward I avoid the stores and the commercials on television that try and mold us into mindless, superficial, debt ridden beings.
I make a BIG deal out of today, Thanksgiving to do an inventory of all that I have and all that I'm blessed NOT to have.
On December 14th I will began Christmas celebration...12 days, isn't there a song? I'll mail beautiful cards to friends & family that are specific to the true meaning of Christmas. I'll put a FEW decorations around the house. There are no "children" in my immediate family so I purchase, wrap and deliver a couple of gifts for children I don't know from families who struggle financially. I'll take a sleigh ride with friends ( I live on the coast!) laugh alot, have hot chocolate and sing "jingle bells". I'll attend one or two performances of choirs performing traditional Christmas carols and maybe attend one performance of the "Nutcracker". A Christmas Eve service at church focusing on the true meaning of the holiday, wraps it up perfectly.
Comfort & Joy is the theme, the purpose and the outcome.

Finally an article that helps me make sense of all of this holiday stress. . . thank you! I love the holidays but every year I start getting this gnawing feeling at the pit of my stomach that does not go away until it is all over and done with. Yes I love my family but you know there is something to be said for small intimate gatherings versus the family reunion. Furthermore I hate straying from budgets and going way overboard with the spending because that is simply what you are expected to do. And you are certainly right about the nutritional downfalls- I have nightmares about how many calories I really consume from Thanksgiving Day until New Years. But hopefully after reading this I can try to keep myself a little better on track this year. Money is very tight for me this year as I know it is for a lot of other people so hopefully I can let people know gently that I will not be spending as much this year and we can all love spending time together without the budget busting of the past!
