Thank you Mette, I really appreciate the references there.

I am of the very unscientific opinion that if more people in the world read more books, it would be a better place.

Likewise, if we could just get more hypnotherapists to read more books, the sky is the limit!

Best wishes to you, Adam.

Nice article Adam.
There was a study in 2013, showing that 10-15 minutes a day of reading fiction would greatly enhance a person’s empathy. Unfortunately, a new team of researchers were unable to reproduce the findings 4 years later. The conclusion was, that while they could not find a short-term connection, there may very well be a long term one. Based on the idea that you get a better understanding of the complexity and variety of people when reading about them, because you practice putting yourself in their position.
But never the less the original study and a study showing that medical students get les empathetic during their study led to the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) now incorporating “narrative medicine” as mandatory. It is inspired by a similar course from Columbia University. Narrative Medicine includes reading poems, novels, studying movies, writing and visiting a chronically ill patient.

I'm a big audible fan Peter and though the benefits noted here are different to those of audiobooks in some ways, I still listen to fiction and nonfiction when out running or in the car. Good to hear from you, it's been a while, best wishes to you, Adam.

Peter, try out Hardcore History podcast by Dan Carlin if you like history. It might be on Audible, certainly on https://www.dancarlin.com/hardcore-history-series/ but is also definitely available on YouTube too. World changing!

I have always had a long list of books that I want to read, but somehow never have enough time. I recently did something that has transformed my reading - I joined Audible.
I now listen to audio books when driving to work instead of mindless pop music, I listen to audio books when I run on my treadmill. I reckon I have added 2 hours per day of 'reading' by doing this.
I have resolved to use Audible for improving myself and only listen to non-fiction. Fiction is reserved for real (Kindle) books when I am tucked up in bed at night.
Audio books do have their limitations, but they are often narrated by the author and it feels like I have a real connection with the author - especially when they are obviously enthusiastic about what they are talking about.
So now I can be running on the treadmill and improving my body while at the same time listening about the history of the Roman Empire and improving my mind. . . . if only I could think of a way of making money at the same time!

Funny that this comes along just as I finish Resistance & Persuasion by Linn and Knowles. Mark Twain also said "While the rest of the species is descended from apes, redheads are descended from cats.”

Some excellent points and reasons for diversifying my reading repertoire. Nice one!
