Hi Andrew, I think my optimism was vindicated by the the end of the weekend, as I waved everyone home, I was thinking what a great group we have this year… And yes, it was probably for all of your benefit that I did get things off my chest before the weekend… Great seeing you, A.

Richard, there are means and ways to market yourself with a ‘social media’ platform such as Facebook – in my opinion.

My own blog posts get posted on my own profile and people that enjoy my work make an informed choice about reading it. I use my own personality and idiosyncrasies to market myself there too, but I don’t attempt to directly sell and shove overt sales messages on other people walls without having developed any kind of relationship with them or attempting to understand if my message is totally irrelevant or not. This is ill-conceived and works the opposite effect than the desired one in my opinion.

Thanks Gråinne, though my football pain continues as our manager and chairman have just resigned, while I was working at the weekend I deleted 12 posts on my facebook wall from people adding links about their businesses and still got invited to an event in a language that I do not speak or understand! Hi Adam, As with Grainne, I have no idea about the football part of what you said!

Not so sure about the Facebook bit. As someone beginning to build a business I expect to use FB to publicise what I do eg new blog posts which will have affiliate links (some of them will be to some chap called Adam Eason, because I own some of his stuff and it’s really good!)

Do you not think it’s ok to use FB for marketing, or is it the way it’s being used eg. ‘in 5 minutes I have a $10,000 dollar workshop on the other side of the world, would you like to come?’ This looks like (and I had not considered this until reading your rant) a bit of a numbers game approach. That would feel ok to me if I were selling cups and saucers (bizarre where free association goes) but doesn’t feel so good when selling personal development… but now I notice I am getting into my own ‘stuff’ about money and therapy/coaching (which is why I am still broke!)

Anyway, thanks for the rant, it was thought provoking.
