Jon, I have come to expect nothing else from you... And the point you make is probably one for another thread... :-)
Though, the point I really want to get across here was that the term 'hypnosis' itself can sometimes pull a set of strings for some people and so using another term can lend itself usefully to the therapeutic process from time to time.

Roy, nice example with the use of the words pertaining to spirituality and religion... Yeah, those words get people thinking all sorts of things.
With regards to educating, we all do that anyway as part of any therapeutic alliance being built - but if the client remains unsure about hypnosis, then perhaps framing it in a different manner or giving it a different term, could help us.

Thanks for the contributions gents :-)

I think the word hypnosis is fine for hypnosis. I think that psychotherapy, nlp and other cognitive approaches masquerading as hypnotherapy and hypno-whatever need a better and more honest title.

Interesting.

Last night I was briefly listening to a call by Bill O'Hanlon and the topic was spirituality. He went on to say how it is important not to use the word religion with a client but rather spirituality (which he define as being connected, compassionate, and contribution).

To invoke and impose.

And once you talk about spirituality, they may lead you on to what they feel connected to and you can work with them from there.

The same may apply here. Instead of calling it "Hypnosis" which many think we are going to turn them in frogs, we just do it, call it relaxation, whatever it is and indirectly do the great work.

At the same time, educating the public may be a good idea as we are not just "doing" to them but showing them how as well.

Well if it sounds more girly, I think I need to find a term that is far more bloke-ish Mel ;-)

Great hearing from you.

How strange, I was thinking about this topic this morning. I enjoyed reading this Adam. I like the word Hypnosis but I also like the idea of branding it as imagery or guided meditation. Purley for reasons that you mentioned in your article... and because I think imagery sounds more girly! :-)
