Hi Adam,
Is it true that suggestions should always be positive ? If we mention the problem in the suggestion does this reinforce the state of negative auto-suggestion in the subject or can the unconscious handle a reference to the fear etc. in the suggestion being made ? e.g. in self-hypnosis can someone say 'the fear is gone', etc. without reinforcing the auto-suggestion 'I feel fear' ?

I do not know who the authority is for the idea of 'no negative suggestions'. It cannot be found in the writings of James Braid or Hippolyte Bernheim, for example. If, let's say, you wanted to remove a physical pain surely you would need to refer to it in your suggestion ?

Hello Mark,

It is tough/impossible to give a finite answer to this question. There is no evidence to suggest the 'correct' application of negative words and if they actually make a difference anyway. Without a doubt, negative hypnotic suggestions effect some people in influential ways, but there is not really a hard and fast rule with regards to the application of them.

Best wishes, Adam.
