Hi Adam,
Having watched the program i have to say that i agree that there wasn't anything advocating the huge benefits of hypnosis and hypnotherapy to members of the public. I would say that i think the program has highlighted some very important issues that do need to be addressed.
Therapists that claim to be 80% 90% or even 100% effectiveness that offer money back guarantees should be taken to task over their claims. If they make these bold claims then by law should be made to produce evidence to prove their claims (The sooner the profession is regulated the better).
The profession and training schools have to play a vital role in helping to correct the problems that were highlighted. They must first of all agree to have the same training standards when assessing students to see if they are up to the required standard to work with members of the public. I would say that many training establishments would be loathed to release their statistics simply because they are not going to fail people attending their courses that are paying large sums of money. Hypnotherapy training school teachers must not be allowed at the end of a training course to act as examiner for their own students. The examiners must have nothing to do with the training establishment holding the course and should be chosen independantly by the main professional organisations. This would then would give members of the public the confidence in choosing the right professional hypnotherapists for them.
With regards to registering with different professional organizations the professional organiszations must carry out more checks on anyone applying for membership,

Ian Smith.

Quite right Richard, and thank you for your comment.

I have watched it too - it can be seen on BBC iplayer if you are in the UK and have a tv license.

There is an argument that shows offer up some vigilence... But I don't think any real effort was made to show people that hypnosis does not have to be like this, that it actually is not really like this in most cases and how to track down and find a good quality therapist.

If people are going to attempt to cast shadows on an entire field, then surely they can also attempt to shine a light somewhere, no?

Hello Adam,

I've just been unfortunate enough to see the BBC Inside Out programme. They seem to take great delight in painting a scary picture about unqualified hypnotherapists, but they don't give advice on how to find a good one or what to look for.

I am actually registered with one of the organisations which allowed that cat to become a member, and I remember having to send in copies of my various certifications and insurance documents to gain membership.

As usual, the reporter has undertaken a lot more subterfuge in order to gain membership to that organisation, than was actually shown on film.

Anyway, upwards and onwards.

There is very little evidence to support claims made by David Knight to be honest... This was an area that Penn and Teller picked up on when they investigated hypnosis; I encourage people to look at their show on hypnosis, it highlights some similar issues.

The media do jump on certain things to make their shows appealing and to court controversy... Some of things they jump on may need to be jumped on though, no?

Especially when people make extraordinary claims and especially when a cat can register to become a qualified hypnotherapist.

Someone highlighted to me today that non-pc comedian Bernard Manning was able to join the BACP and even the subsections specialising in racial issues and sex... Which makes this cat look like a tame issue!

I wouldn't rely on the Media to review the programme with any fairness or balance.
Typical juxtapositioning of story and reference to the BBC programme in The Telegraph today.
