I know we used to make jokes about trainee doctors and the hours they orked and how we'd not really like to be left in their hands in an emergency COuld they actually see us with bags that big under their eyes! :-)

I am delighted to here an official line on the validity of stodgy food - and from a brilliant doctor such as yourself!

Anyway... Back to my lie-in... It is my birthday after all...

Be grateful that the UK has decided to comply with the European Working Time Directive for junior doctors (unlike Ireland). Prior to that, it would have been quite common for doctors to be surviving on 3 hours sleep or less post call. Depending on the rota, this could be up to one night in 3. Weekends are the worst. Potential for broken fragments of sleep 2 nights in a row...before you head into the normal working day on Monday morning! Feel frozen, grumpy, emotional, sleepy...and with a carb craving that poses a danger to anyone standing between you and the biscuit tin! Apparently the craving for stodgy food is related to a drop in circulating leptin levels with lack of sleep. Leptin plays a role in regulating appetite and weight and they reckon this may relate to the increased levels of obesity in people who skimp on sleep every night. Believable, isn't it? I'm still campaigning for that 27 hour day to try to get my 7-8hrs per night though!

Of course, hangovers will also make people a little emotional and induce cravings for junk food ;-)
