Hi Adam,

I watched Derren's show and was amused to hear him keep saying 'now i'm not going to hypnotise you, but I'm just inviting you to allow your mind to enter into a more relaxed place, where you can understand clearly and you can then ... (and he led into the suggestibility test of being glued to seats).

In essence all he did was just read out a suggestibility test (and you could actually see his eyes reading the autocue) and he then displayed an abstract pattern and music which he told people was a subliminal piece filled with suggestions.

The suggestions had already been administered through his introduction to the 'glued seat' phenomenon before the music and graphics started. This time while watching the graphics just allowed the suggestions to sink in.

I did wonder how he was going to hypnotise people over the TV when full hypnotic inductions and deepeners aren't allowed to be broadcast due to some legislation.

I love the mixture of misdirection, psychology, magic and showmanship but I now find myself noticing how Derren actually does some of his tricks and it has kind of taken a bit of the magic out of some of his performances... but only a bit - I still enjoy watching the guy.

One of my friends became glued to his seat... fortunately for only 10 minutes or so (so no painful hypnotic needing the toilet feelings for him) I hadn't realised just how suggestible this friend was. Makes you wonder what kind of fun one can have with situations like that... or is that wrong to suggest now I practice professionally? One wonders...
