Thanks Adam, you make some good points. Interestingly the CD course is a series of exercises which build on each other and are designed to train your mind so that it can reach these states of consciousness without the use of the hemi-sync music. This came from Bob Monroe's experiences as a radio producer and how it altered the course of his life to set up the institute into expanding consciousness. Science has difficulty explaining these experiences since they are very subjective and personal. I agree lots of material out there is worthless in this field and little evidence to support it's impact. Over the years I have experimented with different techniques/ technologies to help achieve meditative states, my experience with this material is that it is the real deal, it is just designed to act as training wheels.I have never managed to reach this level of relaxation and calmness before. For example mind fully awake and body fully asleep. Last night I had the physical sensation of sleep paralysis whilst being fully conscious what an amazing feeling. What is empowering is reaching these same states again without any external stimuli or the need to buy another set of CDs. Thanks for your thoughts, appreciate your work and also implementing alot of it. Cheers James

James, everything I explore and investigate I do so with optimism and expectation. However, optimism and expectation are then at work, just like the placebo effect, laws of association and so on, and they could well be responsible for the results rather than the prouct being tested and assessed.
Just because something or someone has been around a long time, does not mean it works. There is no peer-reviewed, triple blind studies been conducted by independent researchers on the Monroe Institutes products to support any of the claims. Just articles written and 'journal' written by related and interested parties.

I am not poo-pooing them, just being matter of fact. Heck, if it works for one person and does them some good, then I am delighted.

Best wishes, A.

Thanks Adam and no worries. Like you say you use what works for you and resonates for you, that is the most important thing. The Monroe Institute have been going for over thirty years so have some longevity and don't push any particular belief system just an opportunity to find out for yourself. It's also interesting to think from a perspective that if you tell your mind it isn't going to work, that is what you'll find. I'll continue this journey with an open mind and make a personal judgement. Best wishes too, James

Hi James,

This was not really an article by me, not like 90% of the days here on the blog, but thanks for saying it was great anyway.

I have never heard of the Monroe Institute or the Gateway Experience. So cannot offer up any thoughts on them.

That said, most of the holosync, hemi-sync, subliminal, paraliminal, binaural type of stuff bores the hell out of me. They are wrapped in slanted, biased pseudoscience and never come up trumps when paid some properly hard scrutiny by proper science.
It is not really relevant to this blog entry, but you can read some of my thoughts here at this blog entry:

http://adam-eason.com/2010/10/21/hypnosis-and-binaural-beats-can-binaural-beats-be-used-to-induce-hypnosis/

And then my good buddy, lifecoach in the US Tim Brownson also ran a thread on the subject which I contributed to, stirred up a LOT of comments:

http://www.adaringadventure.com/guest-posts/never-speak-ill-of-binaural-beats-in-my-house-woman/

I know the 'technology' you refer to here is not the same as binaural beats, but from what I can see at a quick glance from googling just now, their pseudoscience method of selling it, is very similar.

Sorry :-)

Good hearing from you nonetheless, best wishes, A.

Thanks Marty... Agreed.

Don't get me started on education in this country... Although as I write, Mr Cameron has ignited a race debate with Oxford University which may carry more weight than when Mr Brow (as chancellor) queried the girl from Tyneside not making it in a number of years ago... The fees thing... Pah, don't get me started...

Hi Adam, great article Just wondered if you had come across The Monroe Institute in Virginia? Although not labelled hypnosis I am following the Gateway Experience which uses hemi-sync sound waves to induce altered state of consciousness. At this relaxed state you are able to listen to positive suggestions and I also know they have done research into controlling pain relief via this method. Anyway be interested in your thoughts regarding TMI and their work. Cheers James

The Telegraph has been one of the proponents of the 18th century "boys club" game: "my degree is better than yours because the buildings I sat my exam in were around when Shakespeare was...blah...blah...twaddle...twaddlle..." game. The Daily Mail likes to play it too. Mind you, with the Tories in, there's going to be very few centres of academic excellence in this country because getting into those places will be a matter of how much you or your parents earn and not a matter of ability, skill or determination to learn.

Someone I used to know at The Daily Mirror once called The Telegraph: "the bible for retired colonels". Pretty much sums it up. :)
