I know this is from a while ago, but as a new hypnotherapy graduate I struggle with planning sessions somewhat due to the vast amount of tools that are at our fingertips, however, your advice is good - asking the client not just their goals but more pointedly - what resources do you need? Simple but brilliant. Thank you.

Thanks a lot Adam, this really has answered a lot of questions that have been niggling me for a while:-) I often get anxious about the prospect of dealing with that first client and knowing how to approach it.

In reply to Matt.

Hi Matt,

Delighted this was useful, now for your questions:

"do we prepare the treatment plan in the initial consultation, or the first 'official' session?"

Well, you get the information you require and build rapport, and educate in the initial consultation (I actually send a questionnaire out prior to the first meeting) - you'll get some initial ideas about what you'll do, but you may prefer to formulate your treatment following that consultation when you are equipped with that information and in a position to reflect and consider properly.

"If we do it in the first session, is this likely to mean that the first session will comprise of no hypnosis whatsoever?"

There are still many things you can do with hypnosis if you have not organised the full treatment plan - ESR for example based around the desired outcome, or even teaching self-hypnosis ready for future sessions, or a generic taster, even some suggestibility tests leading to hypnosis of some kind. Though you may choose for the consultation not to include hypnosis at all, just be about information elicitation and orienting the client to the processes and to you as the hypnotherapist.

"how long would we typically spend on this part of the process, and at which point do we begin to implement the plan?"

I'd say you gather information and then formulate your plan, then agree it with the client to ensure they have understanding - after a while and with experience, you can start to do that when you are at consultation stage. You might prefer more time than that until you gain more experience and formulate your plan away from the client, armed with the information you have elicited, then agree the plan by email and/or telephone. Then the next time you meet you start to implement the plan and therapy is underway.

There are no hard and fast rules, you'll start to develop your own preferences Matt.

Hope that helps.

Adam this is such a useful post. Thanks so much for this priceless information and insight into the therapeutic process. However, now I would like to ask do we prepare the treatment plan in the initial consultation, or the first 'official' session? If we do it in the first session, is this likely to mean that the first session will comprise of no hypnosis whatsoever? I think the question that still floats round in my head is related to timing. Now after reading your post, I can see the plan and structure, but how is this timed? As in, how long would we typically spend on this part of the process, and at which point do we begin to implement the plan? Is this done over email or prior to the first session? Or between the consultation and the first session? Sorry a million questions here......
