In reply to <a href="https://adam-eason.com/feeling-tired-using-self-hypnosis-to-feel-really-alert-not-sleepy/#comment-27568">Dan Miller</a>.

I am delighted this was well timed for you Dan. My experience and the evidence I have examined over the years would suggest that actual depth of hypnosis is a misnomer - the individual is not actually going deeper, they are sat in the same place, not moving; it is there perception of depth which is changing. Additionally though, if that individual believes they must go deeper for a process to be effective, then that belief is likely to effect the efficaciousness of the process, yes. Much depends on expectation and belief. Hope that helps.

Best wishes, Adam

You couldn’t have posted this at a better time. I’m beginning my finals this week, and nothing saps my energy like exams. You mention that you don’t always have to be in deep, sleep inducing hypnotic states for hypnosis to be effective, but would you say that deep trances have consistently better results?

I really enjoyed reading your article here Adam on using Self-Hypnosis. I particularly liked your Step Three here because deep breathing increases the amount of oxygen sent to the brain which helps your muscles and mind to relax but at the same time to get alert and not actually finish the self-hypnosis session feeling sleepy and like a zombie like you say. It is important to remember that while breathing deeply the person also has to exhale often since too much oxygen can also have negative effects. Very best for the latest marathon you are running too. ~ Michael
