mark, thank you for your response and valuable contribution.

You are quite right, the journal I get is through the REBHP and not the NCH... Though the NCH's own publication is called the "Hypnotherapy Journal" and thus is my sorry explanation of this faux pas ;-)

I am awaiting my recent copies via the REBHP with much patience though...

Thanks again Mark, appreciated.

Great post Adam.
And your overall point that firstly hypnotherapists don't know the research and secondly they think that if they learn the research then there is no "art" in their practise is spot on.

Evidence-based practise means blending the best clinical evidence with the clinical judgement of the therapist with the client's wishes. It leaves considerable room for clinical judgement and the "art" of hypnotherapy - but it allows you to stand on the shoulders of thousands of research studies. When you start to study the research - and just how careful and detailed some of it is - one is left in awe of those men of science who plough through some really quite dull work to leave us new knowledge. That we don't read it - and often the professional hypnotherapy community disdains it - is truly sad

I particularly like the APA guideline on "a cogent rationale for clinical strategies". Good therapy is generally common sense therapy (e.g. desensitisation, becoming more self-aware, changing the self-talk, learning to relax, assertiveness training, problem solving, imaginal rehearsal). I believe one should be able to explain the therapy approach in a few minutes over the phone in language that a young teenager could understand.

I would like to clarify that I don't believe that The International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (IJCEH) is available via NCH - but certainly it is via an REBHP membership.

( - also would like to apologise to any REBHP member who didn't get their Journals yet! The mailing house of the publisher in the United States, Taylor Francis, have been rather remiss. They promise the Journals are on their way. In the meantime enjoy the online access.)

Best regards
