In reply to <a href="https://adam-eason.com/defining-hypnosis-and-the-best-definition-of-hypnosis/#comment-5012">Matt Dockerty</a>.

Hello Matt,

I enjoyed reading your response, thank you for that.

You know, there are schools of thought that aim to do quite the opposite to that which you have suggested here... Many people believe hypnosis is focusing on one clear thought, to the exclusion of all else - Including the man who coined the term hypnosis, James Braid.

Many of the non-state theorists and sceptical thinkers tend to move away from any element of artfulness and/or confusion and go for clarity of thought and focus.

Again, shows the difference that exists in perception, thoughts and how difficult it is to create a definition.

Have a fabulous day, A.

Good article. I personally imagine hypnosis as artful manipulation of confusion. When we don't know how to respond to something we get confused and open up a normally guarded part of our mind that looks for clues or instruction on how to proceed. Hypnotists layer confusing messages that fall below the threshold of us noticing they're happening until we're very confused indeed and are looking for information on what to do next in general. A perfect time to mention a few things to sort out that phobia then.
